Dr. Patel Utilizing Newest Cataract Technology in Optiwave Refractive Analysis (ORA)
ORA (Optiwave Refractive Analysis). ORA Technology is a sophisticated device used to provide real time surgical measurements of the patient’s eye after the cataract (cloudy lens) is removed so the power of the IOL can be adjusted, if necessary. This technology provides the highest level of customization available, better visual outcomes, and reduces the need for follow-up procedures.
During a pre-operative evaluation for cataract surgery, Chirag J. Patel, M.D., and his staff perform multiple tests and scans on a patient to determine the best-predicted power (or strength) of the replacement Intraocular Lens (IOL) that they implant during the procedure.
The correct strength of the lens depends on so many factors and variables including:
- The length of the eye
- The curvature of the eye
- The predicted location of the new lens
- A history of previous laser vision correct
Complex mathematical algorithms then crunch the numbers, and the result is a predicted power of a chosen lens that will yield the target outcome, allowing patients to see clearer than they have in years.
Most patients will have excellent results using only these formulas. However, any slight alterations during surgery, patients with prior laser vision correction, or other parameters that are not accounted for in the formulas may result in a target outcome that deviates from the preoperative prediction. As a result, those patients may be more dependent on glasses or corrective lenses to obtain optimal vision.
This is where the ORA System Technology comes into play. At any point during surgery, Dr. Patel can quickly take a measurement, which is then analyzed by ORA System to provide accurate information used to optimize decision-making in correcting the vision of that eye. Before this technology, surgeons were unable to assess the quality of vision during the procedure, and would often have to wait until weeks after the surgery to determine the accuracy of the surgical results.
Dr. Patel always strives to provide the best technology for all of his patients – and achieving the best visual outcome is always his priority for each and every patient. The goal at Lake Nona Ophthalmology is to continually invest in your vision, and ORA helps us take another step forward!
