LasersLasers play a rather important role in aesthetic treatments and eye care. At Lake Nona Ophthalmology, we pride ourselves on offering the latest technology and plenty of choices when it comes to your aesthetic and eye care needs.

Discover how lasers can benefit you from an eye health and aesthetic perspective.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a virtually painless medical procedure that can be conducted almost anywhere on the body to remove unwanted body hair, including the legs, underarms, upper lip, chin and bikini line.

The laser is a pulsing beam of light that travels at a fraction of a second and passes through the skin to an individual hair follicle. The heat from the laser damages the hair follicle so that the hair cannot grow in the future. Depending on the size of the area being treated, a session can last anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour and it may take several session to remove all of the unwanted hair. These are the 5 Things to Know Before Undergoing Laser Hair Removal.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

An intense pulsed light system like the Palomar Icon by Cynosure has a proprietary light delivery system that allows for the usage of greater amounts of energy. This optimized light technology allows for superior clearance of vascular and pigmented lesions that goes beyond single-wavelength lasers.

One of the biggest advantages of an IPL procedure is that the benefits heavily outweigh the risks. The potential side effects of photofacial treatment, such as swelling, redness, and facial flushing, are minor and usually disappear within a few hours or days of the procedure.

IPL like that in the Palomar Icon by Cynosure can be used for several aesthetic needs including hair removal, facial vessel and pigment clearance (sun spots, melasma), surgical and acne scar treatment, non-ablative facial treatments, photofacials, and more.

Laser Vision Correction

PRK and LASIK are both blade-free, laser vision correction options available for patients desiring to become free of glasses and contacts.

In PRK, the surface layer of cells are removed gently with a sponge after being soaked in alcohol.  An excimer laser then sculpts the underlying stromal layer of the cornea to allow light to focus appropriately without spectacles, thus promoting clearer vision.  After the procedure, a temporary contact lens is placed onto the eye, allowing new epithelial cells to regenerate and heal.  The lens is then removed three to four days after surgery.

In LASIK, a thin flap is created by a femtosecond laser.  The flap is then pulled back, exposing the underlying stromal tissue of the cornea. An eximer laser, just like the one used in PRK, is then used to reshape the corneal tissue. The flap is then replaced.  Since the superficial layer of cells is not removed, as in PRK, recovery time in LASIK is much more rapid.

Cataract Surgery

ReLACS stands for Refractive Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery.  ReLACS enhances traditional cataract surgery by automating the most critical steps of cataract surgery by using a laser to create precise, accurate, and reproducible incisions, a perfectly circular opening of the lens capsule (capsulotomy), and prime the hardened cataract to ease removal.

The laser uses a precise femtosecond laser; that is one millionth of a billionth of a second fast. The femto-second laser combines the steps of traditional cataract surgery and allows each surgical procedure to be fully customizable to each patient’s desired visual outcomes.
