This month a patient asked: “What are the benefits of eyelid surgery?”
Dr. Patel answered:
We refer to eyelid surgery as blepharoplasty. In fact, it translates directly from the Greek word blepharon meaning “eyelid” and plassein meaning “to form.” This surgical procedure involves removing excess skin, muscle, and fat from sagging eyelids.
Usually the result of the natural aging process, eyelids stretch over time and the muscles supporting them begin to weaken. Excess fat and skin causes sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids and bags under your eyes.
Aside from adding years to your face, severely sagging skin can even begin to obstruct peripheral vision.
Blepharoplasty is generally performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you will go home the same day your surgery is complete. The procedure can be performed along with other procedures like Botox or skin resurfacing.
Benefits of blepharoplasty include:
- A renewed, youthful appearance
- Improved vision
- A more rested look
- Increased self-confidence
After the procedure, patients may experience temporary blurred vision, watery eyes, redness, light sensitivity, and bruising. While your eyes heal it is important to avoid things that can irritate your them like smoke, swimming and even wearing your contacts for a few days. Eyedrops may be prescribed to help with the healing process.
